Menopause belly fat: what reduces visceral fat

The waist is the number that predicts risk. Here is what moves it.

Short answer: Visceral fat responds to overall energy deficit, aerobic training, and incretin therapy, and modestly to hormone therapy. Spot reduction does not exist, but visceral fat is preferentially mobilised early in weight loss — which is why waist circumference often improves faster than total weight. Target a waist below 80 cm where possible and re-measure monthly.

Visceral versus subcutaneous

Subcutaneous fat sits above the abdominal wall and is metabolically fairly inert. Visceral fat surrounds the organs, drains to the portal vein, and drives hepatic insulin resistance and dyslipidaemia. The waist-to-height ratio — keep it below 0.5 — is a good proxy.

  • Energy deficit of any well-tolerated dietary pattern.
  • Aerobic training at moderate intensity, 150+ minutes a week.
  • Incretin therapy, which reduces visceral fat proportionally more than subcutaneous.
  • Alcohol reduction — alcohol contributes disproportionately to central adiposity.
  • Sleep repair.
