The Clinical Insight

The Problem with Standard PMDD Treatment

Most doctors prescribe daily SSRIs for PMDD. You don't need serotonin every day — you only need it during your luteal phase (the 14 days before your period). Daily dosing causes weight gain, libido loss, and emotional numbness. Kindr Health clinicians specialize in Luteal-Phase Dosing: the clinically proven strategy of targeting PMDD only when it happens.

Frequently Asked

Answers, physician-reviewed.

What is PMDD, and how is it different from PMS?
PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) is a DSM-5 diagnosis affecting 5–8% of menstruating women. It causes severe, cyclical mood symptoms — rage, hopelessness, brain fog, and sometimes suicidal ideation — that reliably resolve within days of menstruation. PMS is milder and usually does not impair daily functioning.
What is luteal-phase SSRI dosing?
Luteal-phase (or intermittent) SSRI dosing means taking an SSRI only during the 14 days before your period, rather than every day. Multiple randomized trials — including work by Halbreich, Freeman, and Steiner — show it is as effective as daily dosing for PMDD with fewer side effects (weight gain, libido loss, emotional blunting).
Is this hormonal treatment?
No. The Cycle-Sync Protocol is fully non-hormonal. Luteal Support Packs are supplement-based (Myo-Inositol, Magnesium, B6, L-Theanine). If your clinician determines an SSRI is appropriate, it is a serotonergic — not hormonal — medication.
Do I need a diagnosis before starting?
No formal diagnosis is required to begin the supplement protocol. If you and a Kindr clinician determine an SSRI is appropriate, the telehealth visit includes a validated PMDD screening (DRSP or PSST) as part of your assessment.
What if I already take a daily SSRI?
Do not stop your medication. Book a consult and our clinicians will coordinate with your prescriber on whether a luteal-only transition is appropriate for you.
Is Kindr Health covered by insurance?
Kindr operates on a transparent cash-pay model. Many members submit our itemized superbill for HSA/FSA reimbursement. Prescription SSRIs are typically inexpensive with or without insurance coverage.
How fast will I see results?
Most members report meaningful symptom reduction within 2 complete cycles. Full stabilization typically takes 2–3 cycles as the protocol calibrates to your unique luteal window.
Can I cancel my subscription?
Yes — cancel anytime from your Kindr account, no questions asked. Your Luteal Support Packs continue to ship on your cycle unless paused.
