At what age does menopause typically start?

Most women in the United States reach menopause — defined as 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period — between ages 45 and 55, with the average around 51. Perimenopause, the transition phase with fluctuating hormones and symptoms, often begins in the early 40s and can last four to ten years. Surgical menopause (after removal of both ovaries), chemotherapy, and certain genetic factors can cause earlier onset. If your periods stop before age 40, that is considered premature menopause and warrants a clinical workup.
