Does HRT cause bloating?

Mild bloating is one of the most common early HRT side effects, typically in the first 4–8 weeks while your body adjusts. It is more frequent with oral estrogen than transdermal, and with progesterone (especially synthetic progestins) than with estrogen alone. Most cases resolve on their own. If bloating persists, kindr providers often switch from oral to a patch or gel, lower the progesterone dose, or move from a continuous to a cyclic schedule. Persistent severe bloating warrants evaluation to rule out unrelated GI causes.

- Can HRT cause weight gain? →
No. Trial data shows transdermal HRT is weight-neutral or modestly weight-favorable. Midlife weight gain is driven by metabolic and sleep changes, not HRT.
- Does HRT cause breast tenderness? →
Yes — very common in the first 4–8 weeks. Usually mild and resolves. Lowering the estrogen dose or switching from oral to transdermal often helps.
