Technically, menopause is one moment in time — the 12-month anniversary of your last menstrual period. Functionally, "menopause" colloquially refers to the entire symptomatic transition, which spans 7 to 14 years for most women. Hot flashes alone average 7-10 years. Below is what the research says about each phase and what determines how long it lasts for you.
Menopause = one moment in time — 12 months after your final menstrual period.
Everything before = perimenopause (4-10 years on average).
Everything after = postmenopause — the rest of your life.
Perimenopause: 4-10 years. Menopause: defined moment. Postmenopause: indefinite. Active symptomatic period spans 7-14 years for most women, sometimes longer.
The Avis et al. SWAN analysis found a median total duration of 7.4 years of hot flashes, with about a third of women experiencing them for 10+ years. Onset before menopause and Black/Hispanic ethnicity are associated with longer duration. Treatment can resolve them within weeks regardless of natural duration.
You cannot shorten the underlying transition. You can dramatically shorten the suffering. HRT, fezolinetant, paroxetine 7.5 mg, gabapentin, and CBT all have evidence for reducing symptom severity and frequency.
