Population studies (notably SWAN) show that vasomotor symptoms persist for a median of 7.4 years, with some women experiencing them for over a decade. Symptoms tend to be most intense in the year before and the two years after the final period. Untreated hot flashes are linked to disrupted sleep, mood symptoms, and reduced quality of life — they are not "just a phase to ride out." Effective treatments include transdermal estradiol, the non-hormonal NK3 antagonist fezolinetant, and certain SSRIs.
