Is testosterone therapy safe for women in menopause?

Reviewed by Dr. Ana Lisa Carr, MD, MBA · Last reviewed May 10, 2026

Answer published

For women with persistent hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) after menopause, low-dose testosterone is supported by the Global Consensus Position Statement (2019) when prescribed at physiologic doses and monitored. Testosterone is used off-label in U.S. women — there is no FDA-approved female-dose product — so dosing must be careful and side effects (acne, oily skin, hair changes) tracked. It should not be used outside an evidence-based protocol, and pellets are generally not recommended due to supraphysiologic levels.
