What Cortexin is
Cortexin is a standardized preparation of low-molecular-weight peptides (<10 kDa), free amino acids, vitamins and minerals derived from purified bovine cerebral cortex.
Developed in the Soviet Union and approved in Russia and several CIS / Eastern European countries, it is widely used in neurology and pediatric neurology for cognitive, post-stroke, TBI, and developmental indications.
It is not FDA-approved in the United States. Compounded forms are dispensed by licensed 503A pharmacies under physician prescription for off-label use.
How it works
The peptide fractions act as neurotrophic-factor mimetics, supporting neuronal survival, axonal sprouting, and synaptic plasticity.
Additional reported mechanisms include modulation of glutamate/GABA balance, reduction of neuronal oxidative stress, and anti-inflammatory effects on microglia.
The overall signal is pleiotropic — multi-pathway neurotrophic and neuroprotective — comparable conceptually to Cerebrolysin but derived from cortex rather than whole brain.
