- Estrace and generic estradiol tablets — bioidentical 17β-estradiol. Available in 0.5, 1, and 2 mg. The most-prescribed oral estrogen in modern menopause practice.
- Premarin — conjugated equine estrogens (CEE). The original menopause estrogen (1942). Available in 0.3, 0.45, 0.625, 0.9, and 1.25 mg. Less commonly first-line today.

Who should choose a patch instead

Estrogen pills and safety — 2026 view
The Women's Health Initiative found an elevated risk of breast cancer, stroke, and VTE in women who started conjugated equine estrogens + medroxyprogesterone more than 10 years after menopause. Modern re-analyses and subsequent trials (KEEPS, ELITE) show that the risk-benefit profile is much more favorable when HRT is started within 10 years of menopause and when route (transdermal vs oral) and progestogen (micronized progesterone vs synthetic progestin) are chosen thoughtfully. NAMS 2022 explicitly rejects an arbitrary stopping age.
