What it is

Climara is a brand-name once-weekly transdermal patch delivering 17β-estradiol — the bioidentical form of estrogen made by the ovaries.

It comes in five strengths (0.025, 0.0375, 0.05, 0.075, 0.1 mg/day) and is changed once every 7 days.

How it works

A clear adhesive patch delivers a steady serum estradiol level through the skin for 7 days, bypassing the liver first-pass that occurs with oral estrogen.

Steady delivery stabilizes the hypothalamic thermoregulatory center, which is what reduces hot flashes and night sweats.

How often do you change a Climara patch?

Once every 7 days. Rotate placement (lower abdomen, alternating sides) to reduce skin irritation.

Climara vs Vivelle-Dot?

Both deliver bioidentical estradiol. Climara is changed once weekly; Vivelle-Dot is smaller and changed twice weekly. Efficacy is comparable at equivalent doses.

Can I shower or swim with Climara?

Yes. The patch is designed to stay on through bathing, swimming, and exercise.

Do I still need progesterone with Climara?

Yes, if you have a uterus. Estrogen alone increases endometrial cancer risk; micronized progesterone at bedtime is standard.
